Plush

Artist Statement:
The global pandemic reminded us that uncertainty is a constant, we are not as secure as we’d like to believe. Awareness is the impetus of Plush, stuffed animals are the thread of my explorations. Themes of comfort and security in kitsch motifs permeate my artworks, a reflection of the uncertain times we live in.

On the surface, my paintings are a study of objects, I paint what I see. I begin my process by selecting a stuffed animal from the store. At the studio, I set up a still-life, light the subject with Edison bulbs and sketch the scene on to canvas using thinned paint. I then build up layers of paint while alternating between painting the foreground and background.
