Plush

Artist Statement: The global pandemic reminded us that uncertainty is a constant, we are not as secure as we once remembered. This awareness is the impetus of my current series of paintings, Plush. Stuffed animals are the subject matter, a thread for exploration that lead to larger concepts. Kitsch motifs of comfort and security permeate this series of artworks, a reflection of the uncertain times we live in.

On the surface, my paintings are a study of objects, I paint what I see. I begin my process by selecting a stuffed animal from the store. At the studio, I set up a still-life, light the subject with Edison bulbs and sketch the scene on to canvas using thinned paint. I then build up layers of paint while alternating between painting the foreground and background.
